An automatic sprinkler system suppresses a fire where it starts, before it spreads, through individual sprinkler heads that activate only when heat from a fire directly below them reaches the head's rated temperature, rather than every head in a room discharging at once as older fiction sometimes suggests. Dry-pipe systems, where the pipe holds pressurized air or nitrogen instead of water until a head activates and a valve releases water into the line, exist for spaces that could freeze, unheated warehouses in colder climates, but see limited use in Saudi Arabia outside a handful of specific applications like cold storage facilities, where the dry-pipe design prevents the water in the pipe itself from freezing.
