A standby generator is bought once and judged during the outage nobody planned. Two things decide whether it performs: honest sizing and a transfer scheme that matches how the building actually loses power.

Sizing starts with the rating definition. ISO 8528 separates standby, prime and continuous ratings, and a set rated for occasional standby duty will not tolerate being run as a prime source on a site with an unreliable supply. Beyond that, Saudi ambient conditions matter. Manufacturer ratings assume reference conditions, and a generator sitting in a hot plant room or an enclosure in summer needs derating, which is exactly the step that gets skipped when an offer looks cheap.

Load acceptance is the second trap. A block load like a large motor or a chiller starting has a very different effect from the same load applied gradually. Where step loading is heavy, the set is sized on load acceptance rather than on running kW, and that is often what separates a specification that works from one that trips on transfer.

Transfer switching then decides the user experience. Automatic transfer switches handle the changeover, and in hospitals NFPA 110 sets how quickly power must be available. Synchronising panels are needed where multiple sets share load or where the system runs in parallel with the mains during transfer.
