Airside electrical work is governed by aviation rules rather than ordinary building codes, and the compliance trail is checked. ICAO Annex 14 sets the international requirements for aerodrome lighting, and in Saudi Arabia GACA applies them through its own regulatory framework. Colour, intensity, spacing, and the failure behaviour of the system are all specified rather than left to judgment.
Airfield ground lighting is a system, not a set of fittings. Runway and taxiway circuits typically run as series loops fed by constant current regulators, with isolating transformers at each fitting, so that a single lamp failure does not take out the circuit. Redundancy and switchover time for the supply are defined by the category of operation the aerodrome is approved for.
Obstruction lighting applies well beyond airports. Tall buildings, towers, masts, chimneys and construction cranes within defined surfaces need low, medium or high intensity obstacle lights depending on height and location, with the specification driven by the obstacle limitation surfaces around the aerodrome. Getting this wrong is a regulatory problem, not an aesthetic one.
Helipads carry their own requirements: perimeter lighting, touchdown and lift off area lighting, floodlighting and approach path indicators, all with backup supply arrangements.
