A UPS is bought for two different reasons that get confused. One is ride through: keeping the load alive during the seconds before a generator takes over. The other is power conditioning: protecting sensitive equipment from sags, surges, frequency variation and harmonic distortion that never register as an outage but shorten equipment life. Online double conversion covers both, which is why it dominates in hospital and data centre work.

Sizing is where offers diverge. Capacity in kVA is only part of it. Runtime is set by the battery, and the honest number depends on the load at the time of failure, the end of life capacity of the battery rather than the day one figure, and the room temperature. Batteries lose capacity and lifespan in heat, and a plant room in Saudi Arabia that drifts above design temperature will not deliver the runtime on the datasheet.

Battery choice follows from that. VRLA is cheaper to buy. Lithium costs more up front and wins on footprint, cycle life and tolerance of higher ambient temperatures, which changes the lifecycle comparison in this climate more than it would in Europe.

Modular systems suit facilities that will grow. Capacity is added as the load arrives instead of paying for the full build on day one, and a faulty module is swapped without dropping the load.

How do I size a UPS for my load?+

Start from the actual connected load and its power factor, add growth allowance, then set runtime from what has to survive until the generator takes over or an orderly shutdown completes. Battery sizing should use end of life capacity and the real room temperature, not the datasheet ideal.

Are lithium batteries better than VRLA in Saudi Arabia?+

Often yes on lifecycle. Lithium handles higher ambient temperatures, takes less floor space and lasts more cycles, which offsets the higher purchase price, particularly in rooms that run warm.
