Power Quality

NLS Power supplies voltage stabilizers, automatic voltage regulators, power factor correction banks, harmonic filters, surge protection, power quality analysers and isolation transformers for Saudi facilities dealing with SEC power factor penalties, IEEE 519 limits or unstable supply.

Power quality problems rarely announce themselves. Equipment fails earlier than it should, protection trips for no obvious reason, transformers run hot, and the electricity bill carries charges nobody can explain. The causes are usually measurable and fixable.

Power factor is the most direct. Motor and inductive loads draw reactive current that does no useful work but still has to be delivered, and SEC applies penalties when power factor falls below the threshold. Correction banks sized against the actual load profile raise the power factor above that line, and in motor heavy facilities this equipment usually pays back faster than any other electrical improvement.

Harmonics are the subtler problem. Variable speed drives, UPS rectifiers and IT power supplies draw current in pulses rather than smoothly, and the resulting distortion overheats transformers and neutral conductors, causes nuisance tripping and can put a facility outside IEEE 519 limits. Harmonic filters address it, and a power quality analyser is what tells you which order of harmonic you are actually dealing with rather than guessing.

Voltage stability matters at the end of long feeders and on remote sites, where voltage drop and fluctuation stress equipment. Stabilizers and AVRs hold output within tolerance.

Surge protection under IEC 61643 is the cheapest insurance in the electrical package, protecting against both lightning transients and switching surges from within the installation.

NLS Power supplies stabilizers, AVRs, PFC banks, harmonic filters, surge protection devices, power quality analysers and isolation transformers.

Voltage Stabilizers

Voltage Stabilizers

Voltage stabilizers correct incoming supply voltage that drifts outside equipment tolerance, holding output within a tight band regardless of input swings. NLS sources servo-controlled and relay-type voltage stabilizers sized for the voltage drop and sag conditions common on long feeders at remote Saudi sites, protecting sensitive equipment on industrial, medical, and commercial installations.

Automatic Voltage Regulators

Automatic Voltage Regulators

Automatic voltage regulators (AVRs) hold generator or supply output voltage within a tight tolerance band as load and speed vary, sensing output continuously and adjusting excitation or a tap changer in response. NLS sources AVR units for standalone generators and larger tap-changing regulators for distribution feeders, matched to the voltage regulation class Saudi projects specify.

Power Factor Correction Banks

Power Factor Correction Banks

Power factor correction (PFC) banks add capacitor banks in parallel with an inductive load to reduce the reactive power a site draws from the grid, raising power factor toward unity and avoiding SEC low-power-factor penalty charges. NLS sources fixed and automatic PFC banks sized against a site's actual reactive load profile for industrial and commercial installations across Saudi Arabia.

Harmonic Filters

Harmonic Filters

Harmonic filters reduce voltage and current distortion caused by non-linear loads such as variable frequency drives, UPS systems, and LED lighting drivers, bringing a site's harmonic distortion within IEEE 519 limits. NLS sources passive and active harmonic filters sized against a site's actual measured harmonic spectrum for industrial and data centre installations across Saudi Arabia.

Surge Protection Devices

Surge Protection Devices

Surge protection devices (SPDs) clamp transient overvoltage from lightning strikes or switching events before it reaches connected equipment, installed at defined points in an electrical distribution system per IEC 61643 classification. NLS sources Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 SPDs for main distribution boards, sub-panels, and sensitive equipment on industrial, commercial, and hospital installations across Saudi Arabia.

Power Quality Analyzers

Power Quality Analyzers

Power quality analyzers measure voltage, current, harmonics, power factor, and transient events at a point in an electrical system, providing the data needed to diagnose a problem before specifying a correction. NLS sources portable and panel-mounted power quality analyzers for site surveys and continuous monitoring on industrial, commercial, and data centre installations across Saudi Arabia.

Isolation Transformers

Isolation Transformers

Isolation transformers separate a load electrically from its supply through magnetic coupling with no direct conductive path, blocking common-mode noise and, on medical IT systems, removing the earthed reference fault current would otherwise need to trip a breaker. NLS sources isolation transformers for hospital operating theatre power systems, sensitive electronics, and general noise-isolation applications across Saudi Arabia.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do we stop power factor penalties on the SEC bill?+

Install power factor correction sized against the actual load profile so the measured power factor stays above the penalty threshold. A power quality survey first confirms the size needed rather than guessing.

What causes nuisance tripping and hot transformers?+

Often harmonic distortion from variable speed drives and rectifier loads. The distorted current overheats transformers and neutrals and can trip protection with no obvious fault. A power quality analyser identifies which harmonics are present before choosing a filter.

Is surge protection worth fitting?+

Yes. It is inexpensive relative to the equipment it protects, and it covers switching transients from inside the installation as well as lightning, which are more common than most people expect.
